Our Philanthropy
Publicly Documented Giving in Education, Health Care, and Community
With their business success, Brij and Sunita Agrawal have become notable philanthropists, focusing on education, health care access, and community development.
"I would not have graduated from college if it wasn't for the UH System. That is why I am so passionate about supporting UH."
— Brij Agrawal
The Brij & Sunita Agrawal Foundation
The Brij & Sunita Agrawal Foundation is a private charitable foundation based in the Houston area, with formal records dating to 2015. The foundation supports a range of causes, primarily through grants to educational, health care, cultural, and community organizations.
Both Brij and Sunita serve as directors of the foundation, which allows their family to organize and expand their charitable giving. The foundation focuses on:
- Educational scholarships and facilities
- Community health, care access, and cultural programs
- Civic, first-responder, and community-service organizations
- Disaster relief efforts
Health Care Access in Sugar Land
St. Luke's Health - Sugar Land Hospital
In 2026, Brij and Sunita Agrawal made a $5.5 million gift to St. Luke's Foundation in support of St. Luke's Health-Sugar Land Hospital. The gift supports clinical programs and helps establish a nearby Primary Care Community Clinic for residents with limited access to primary care.
CommonSpirit Health Philanthropy described the commitment as the largest gift ever made to St. Luke's Health-Sugar Land Hospital. In recognition, the hospital's main patient tower and adjoining pavilion are being renamed the Agrawal Family Patient Tower and Pavilion.
Houston Methodist Sugar Land
The Agrawals also made a recent gift to Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital that created an Excellence Fund endowment and established a Graduate Medical Education Fund. The fund provides seed money to support family medicine residents and sports medicine fellows as the hospital expands residency and fellowship training.
Recognition at Houston Methodist Sugar Land includes the Brij and Sunita Agrawal Pavilion at Medical Office Building 3, reflecting the couple's support for care, training, and access close to home.
Education and Workforce Development
The Agrawals have been loyal supporters of UH for decades. Their commitment to the university that gave Brij his start has manifested in multiple significant contributions.
University of Houston Sugar Land Gift (2022)
In 2022, Brij and Sunita pledged a $1 million gift to the UH College of Technology to upgrade manufacturing lab equipment at the Sugar Land campus. This donation, part of UH's Houston Rise campaign, is being matched by other funds for a total impact up to $3.5 million.
In recognition of this transformative gift, UH named the new auditorium in that building the "Brij and Sunita Agrawal Auditorium."
UH Sugar Land Campus (2005)
Brij and Sunita donated $100,000 toward the construction of the first classroom building at the UH Sugar Land campus, a partnership with Wharton County Junior College.
Presidential Endowment
In the mid-2000s, Brij created a Presidential Endowment at UH's Cullen College of Engineering with an initial gift of $30,000, providing ongoing scholarships for engineering students.
Scholarship Programs
Understanding firsthand the transformative power of education, the Agrawals have made scholarship support a cornerstone of their philanthropy.
The Presidential Endowment at UH's Cullen College of Engineering provides ongoing support for deserving students pursuing engineering degrees. These scholarships help students who, like Brij, may be balancing work and studies while pursuing their dreams.
Beyond financial support, Brij has personally invited scholarship students to his home for holiday gatherings, providing mentorship and a "social network" for young people – a reflection of the couple's hands-on approach to philanthropy.
Disaster Relief
Hurricane Katrina Relief (2005)
When Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast in 2005, Brij took action. He helped raise $75,000 for Hurricane Katrina relief by rallying fellow Subway franchisees to support victims of the disaster.
This effort was cited by UH officials as an example of his charitable spirit beyond academia, demonstrating the Agrawals' commitment to helping those in need during times of crisis.
India House Houston
Brij and Sunita are publicly associated with India House, a community center in Houston serving the Indo-American community.
India House's public leadership page lists Brij as a trustee and lists Brij and Sunita together among board members. India House also publicly identifies them as sponsors of community programs such as yoga and children's art classes.
This public association is consistent with the foundation's broader focus on cultural, educational, and community-service organizations.
Additional Community Giving
Beyond major named gifts, the foundation and family continue to support local organizations that strengthen culture, education, public service, and community life across Greater Houston.
Recent giving relationships documented through public announcements, foundation records, and institutional acknowledgments include India House Houston, Arya Samaj of Greater Houston, the Indo-American Charity Foundation, first-responder community initiatives in Sugar Land, University of Houston, Houston Methodist, and St. Luke's Health-Sugar Land Hospital.
This broader giving reflects the same philosophy behind the foundation's major commitments: invest in institutions that expand opportunity, preserve community, and meet practical needs for families across Houston.
